Writing Research Statement for Academic Jobs

Since my colleague is preparing for a research fellowship application, I thought I would search around for useful materials. These materials will probably come useful to me one day too..

Here's what I found:

From UPenn
www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/gradstud/Writing_Research_Statement.ppt

From MIT
http://gsc.students.mtu.edu/funding/GeneralFellowshipProposalWriting.pdf#search=%22how%20to%20write%20future%20research%20plan%22
(Seems more applicable for sciences)

From Harvard
http://www.gsas.harvard.edu/financial/essays.html

And since I generally leave the best to the last (ask my wife- I finish my my rice before starting on the fish or whichever the main dish)

Happy Anniversary

Yesterday marks the 4th month wedding anniversary for g and me..

My dear wife,

Thanks for marrying me,
Thanks for all the times when you give me a hug when I'm sad; cry when I'm depressed and find ways to cheer me up;
Thanks for smiling and being amused when I watched silly movies like hot shots; or clamour to watch hot shots part deux
Thanks for cooking for me daily, making sure that I have a proper breakfast, lunch and dinner
Thanks for rolling your eyes when I say something funny (even when you don't think it's funny :P)
Thanks for bearing with me even when I make funny noises and sing when I walked around our home
Thanks for not waking me up even when I snore (sometimes)
Thanks for all the supermarket shopping at 1930hrs- 2000hrs when Tesco has their prices reduced
Thanks for driving me to work when I feel lazy to cycle
Thanks for taking the time and energy to listen to me when I grumble (about nonsensical stuff) wish I was somewhere else
Thanks for cutting my hair (even when it's quite painful sometimes :P)
Thanks for explaining what I'm trying to say in BS sessions when everyone else's comprehension ability seems lacking :P hahaha)
Thanks for organising my thoughts when I think of ten thousand things to do but in the end do none (or rather bits and pieces of many :P)
Thanks for sitting down to listen with me Mrbrown podcasts (sorry mrbrown), national day songs, reading Daryl's blog (sorry daryl) even though you would have preferred to do something else
Thanks for sharing your day with me even though I can't remember most of my biology lessons from O Levels and thanks for skipping the gory, bloody and painful bits :)
Thanks for watching scooby doo with me to help improve my deductive (or is it inductive) skills
Thanks for playing all the juvenile games with me
Thanks for always believing in me
Thanks for praying for me daily
Thanks for sharing your life with me, both the happy and painful memories
Thanks for always reminding me something to give thanks for

Thank you for being my wonderful wife....

I love you.

PhD Comics

Whoever said that academics can't have fun. I'm really starting to enjoy Mankiw's blog.

Another gem that I found:

Capitalism, Freedom and Milton

Haven't been able to update the blog as regularly as I hoped.

Think I have gradually come to enjoy Mankiw's blog :)

Guess what- a cartoon:

If you enjoy Milton Friedman, check out the videos on Mankiw's 13 August entry:
